30 JUNE | FESTIVAL DEL BAMBUCO @ New Latin Corner

Bambuco is a traditional music genre originated from Colombia. It has a beat structure similar to the European waltz or polska (not to be confused with the polka). Typically a bambuco piece is a folk music song accompanied by a stylized group dance.

Latin Corner celebrates this 8th June the Festival of Andean Music “Mono Nuñez” with live music by special guests Duo Sensación. “Mono Nuñez” Festival began in 1975 and commemorates Benigno Núñez Moya, the musician, interpreter and composer born in Ginebra, Valle del Cauca, Colombia.

Since the end of the 19th century, Spanish composers such as Falla, Mompou and Granados have been influenced by the stories and flavour of traditional Spanish music, the guitar being one of the main sources of inspiration.

One of Africa’s supergroups, Orchestra Baobab came together in 1970, taking their name from the Dakar night-club where they were resident for most of the following decade. Distinguished from the... outset by their multi-ethnic membership, drawing in musicians from all over Senegal as well as Togo and Nigeria, their music was broad and multi-lingual, but with a strong Cuban flavour.
