CONCERT | INTI ILLIMANI HISTORICO Ft guitarist John Williams : 13 SEPT. @UnionChapelUK

Connect-Ar presents Inti-Illimani legendary Chilean Ensemble Band in concert, featuring Grammy Award winning guitarist John Williams this Autumn, at London’s Union Chapel.

“One of the great groups in any style”

Inti-Illimani is a legendary instrumental and vocal folk Chilean ensemble and one of the most influential bands in South America. Formed by a group of university students in 1967, the group acquired widespread popularity for their song Venceremos (We Shall Win), which became an anthem of popular unity in Chile and neighbouring countries.

John Williams’s first professional performance was in London on 6 November 1958. Since then, he has been performing throughout the world and has made regular appearances on radio and TV. He has recorded almost the entire repertoire for the guitar and has extended it by commissioning guitar concertos from composers such as Stephen Dodgson, André Previn, Patrick Gowers, Richard Harvey and Steve Gray. He has recorded albums of duets with fellow guitarists Julian Bream and Paco Peña. John Williams is a visiting professor and honorary member of the Royal Academy of Music in London.

Following exile in Europe during the 70’s Chilean coup, Inti-Illimani incorporated new musical elements creating a distinctive fusion of modern world music, becoming internationally known members of the Nueva Canción (New Song) movement.

Led by Horacio Salinas, musical director and composer of many of their emblematic melodies and songs, Inti Illimani have created classic recordings such as ‘Palimpsesto’, ‘Fragments of a Dream’ and ‘Leyenda’ with Paco Peña and John Williams, with their latest album ‘Travesura’ released this year.

Their artistic collaborations include recording and performing with Victor Jara, Violeta Parra, Peter Gabriel, Ana Tijoux, Diego El Cigala and afro-Peruvian singer Eva Ayllon amongst others.

This is a unique musical journey with songs from each era influenced by time and social changes, the breath of vocal and instrumental harmonies, the sounds of South America’s folk rhythms and Inti-Illimani’s fascinating cultural history.
