NATIONAL THEATRE/ 10/10/12 / 5.45PM / FREE

Descriptive, compelling and unexpected music from a Paraguayan harp, hurdy gurdy, kena flutes alongside classical and jazz sounds, blended into a decisively Colombian sound.
Mauricio Velasierra is a player of the Kena Flute, mixing modern jazz improvisation with traditional Andean melodies and contemporary harmonies.
His Main instrument “The Kena”, is normally played in one key, but Mauricio has created his own system to play in all keys and quarter tones; allowing for the melancholic sounds of an ancient culture to combine with contemporary jazz styles, Asian sounds, and a rich mixture of Afro-Andean grooves.
His music has a distinct identity with a strong personal narrative, giving his compositions vibrancy and a strange familiarity. His band combines musicians from all over the world, coming from very different musical styles

This Latin grooves band, formed by famed Colombian singer Martha Acosta, has been “salsa-ing” across the UK and Europe for more than 5 years now. Martha, best known for her work with her all woman Latin band “Candela” and Roberto Pla’s “Latin Ensemble”, drives the band along with her searing Latin vocals and powerhouse personality. And she is ably supported by some of the finest Latin musicians on the scene. One of the best salsa bands working the scene today.
